Indonesian Apartments: A Case of British Standard Cast Iron Flange Water Meters

Project Background: Water Supply Metering Challenges in Jakarta Apartments

A medium-sized apartment project in Indonesia, with a total construction area of approximately 28,000 square meters, is planned to have 12 floors and 68 residential units, with an expected occupancy of over 800 people.

As a key residential project for public welfare in the area, its water supply system must balance stability and precise management – it needs to meet the flow demand during peak water usage periods while also achieving accurate metering for each household to prevent water waste and billing disputes.

The project party has clearly put forward two core requirements:

  • The water meters must comply with the BS EN 14154 British standard (a general specification for water meters in Europe), ensuring measurement accuracy in line with international standards and compatibility with the local building project acceptance system;
  • The appearance must be custom-made in RAL 3020 red, echoing the warm-toned design of the apartment’s exterior facade and aligning with the traditional Indonesian perception that “red symbolizes vitality and safety”.

Requirement Decomposition: Precise Matching from Standard to Customization

Based on the actual situation of the project, we held three rounds of technical communication meetings with the client and ultimately identified three core requirement dimensions:

Standard Compliance: Strict Adaptation to British Standards

The Indonesian construction industry enforces strict standard certifications for imported metering equipment. The project party requires that the water meters must comply with the BS EN 14154:2005 British standard (General Specification for Water Meters and Heat Meters in Europe), and also pass the local SNI certification (Indonesian National Standard).

This requirement not only means that the metering accuracy of the water meters must reach Class B level (error at minimum flow Q3 ≤ ±5%, error at dividing flow Q2 ≤ ±2%), but also that they must meet regional regulations in terms of material environmental friendliness and safety protection level.

Environmental Adaptability: Durable Design for Tropical Climates

In response to the high-temperature and high-humidity environment of Jakarta, the customer has requested that the water meter housing be highly resistant to corrosion, with a salt spray test duration of 1000 hours without rust.

Additionally, the internal mechanism of the meter should be made of high-temperature resistant materials to prevent deformation of components due to high temperatures and ensure measurement accuracy.

Customization Requirements: Dual Adaptation of Appearance and Functionality

In addition to the red appearance customization, the project party also requires that the water meters adopt three specifications of flange connections, namely DN50/DN65/DN80, based on the pipeline layout , and the height of the meter body should be controlled within 180mm to fit the limited installation space of the pipe well.

At the same time, the water meters need to reserve an RS485 communication interface to facilitate the later connection to the apartment’s smart water management system, enabling remote meter reading and data monitoring.

Application Outcomes: Customer Recognition and Long-Term Value

Short-Term Outcomes: Precise Measurement and Convenient Operation and Maintenance

Since the water meters were officially put into use in May 2024, the project party has reported the following:

Measurement Accuracy: The monthly water bill calculation error has been consistently within ±1%, with a customer satisfaction rate of 98% regarding the billing results, and no billing disputes have occurred.

Operation and maintenance efficiency: The flange connection design has reduced the single water meter maintenance time from the conventional one hour to 20 minutes, and no water leakage accidents have occurred.

The appearance is well adapted: The red water meters are highly consistent with the architectural facade style, becoming a “highlight detail” in the project acceptance and receiving praise from the local housing and urban-rural development department.

Long-term Value: Laying the Foundation for Smart Operation and Maintenance

As of October 2025, the water meters have been in stable operation for 17 months. There is no obvious wear on the coating of the meter body, and the measurement accuracy of the mechanism has not declined.

The data uploaded through the RS485 interface has enabled the property management to achieve “peak water usage warning” and “abnormal leakage location” (in March 2025, two minor leaks in the household pipes were successfully identified).

This has cumulatively saved about 1,200 cubic meters of water resources and reduced operation and maintenance costs by 15% for the project.

Customer Feedback and Extended Cooperation

In the 2025 annual cooperation assessment, the project party stated: “This water meter not only meets all our requirements for standards, appearance and performance, but also exceeds expectations in terms of adaptability to tropical environments and smart upgrades.”

Based on the trust established through this cooperation, the customer has signed water meter supply contracts for the next three apartment projects (with a total scale of over 300 units) with us and has recommended us to other local developers.

Summary and Outlook: Insights from Deeply Cultivating the Southeast Asian Market

The successful completion of the Indonesian apartment water meter project has confirmed the core value of “regional demand adaptation + customized product development”. In the future, we will further optimize our product solutions based on the characteristics of the Southeast Asian market:

Climate Adaptation: Develop materials and coating processes that are more resistant to high temperatures and humidity.

Standard alignment: Complete local certifications in various countries (such as SIRIM in Malaysia and TISI in Thailand) ahead of schedule to shorten the project cycle for customers.

Intelligence Upgrade: Integrated with NB-IoT wireless communication function, it meets the remote meter reading requirements in scenarios without network cabling.

We believe that by focusing on “precisely addressing customer pain points”, we will continue to provide more high-quality fluid metering solutions for construction projects in Southeast Asia and become a trusted partner for local customers.
